Finish (PBR roughness)

Approximate roughness: matt 0.8, satin 0.5, gloss 0.3. Both files were opened in real SketchUp. The 2025+ file carries PBR roughness; the 2023–2024 file also opens in 2025 and 2026, without roughness. For 2022 and older, use the Ruby line.

Ruby Console line

m = Sketchup.active_model.materials.add("RAL 7016 Anthracite grey"); m.color = Sketchup::Color.new(59, 64, 68)

Open Extensions › Developer › Ruby Console (Window › Ruby Console before 2023), paste, press Enter. The color is added to the model’s materials.

What it does

A client says "RAL 7016" or names a paint color, and you need it in SketchUp now. Type the code, the name or a hex value: the tool shows the color with its HEX, RGB 0–255, RGB 0–1 for renderers, HSL, Lab and light reflectance, flags colors no real paint can reach in a render, and gives you a .skm material file or a one-line Ruby command. It also works the other way: pick any color, even from a photo, and see the closest RAL and paint colors with their CIEDE2000 difference. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose a collection (RAL Classic or a paint maker) and type a code, a name or a hex value such as #3B4044.
  2. 2Read or copy the values you need: HEX for SketchUp and design tools, RGB 0–1 for V-Ray, Enscape or scripts, LRV for lighting.
  3. 3Download the .skm for your SketchUp version (or a basket of colors as one collection), or paste the Ruby line into the Ruby Console.

Questions

Are the RAL values official?

RAL defines physical color standards, not screen colors. The values here are the ones RAL’s own website uses to display each RAL Classic color (read on 1 October 2026). A screen cannot reproduce a physical color exactly, so treat them as approximate and check a real RAL sample before ordering paint or powder coating.

Which SketchUp versions open the .skm files?

We opened both files in real SketchUp before publishing. The “2023–2024” file opened in SketchUp 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. The “2025+” file adds PBR roughness; it opened in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and SketchUp 2023 refused it. For SketchUp 2022 and older, paste the Ruby Console line instead.

How do I add the colors to my SketchUp materials?

Unzip the basket (or put single .skm files) into a new folder inside %AppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 20XX\SketchUp\Materials\ and restart SketchUp: the folder appears as a collection in the Materials panel. You can also open any folder from the Materials panel’s Details menu with “Open or create a collection”.

What is render-safe albedo?

Real paint reflects between about 2.7 % (the darkest) and 92.7 % (the brightest) of light, judging by the light reflectance values paint makers publish. A base color outside that range makes physically based renderers such as V-Ray, Enscape, D5 or Twinmotion show glowing whites or dead blacks. The tool scales such a color into range and keeps its hue.

Where do the RGB 0–1 values go?

RGB 0–1 is the same color with each channel divided by 255, the way many renderers, 3ds Max scripts, Blender and SketchUp Ruby take colors. They are sRGB values, not linear, so paste them into a color field set to sRGB.

Why is there no Pantone, and how does NCS work here?

Pantone and NCS color data are licensed, so the tool has no table of their colors. You can still type an NCS code such as S 0502-G: the tool lists the colors whose makers publish that code as their own nearest match (today Egger and Kronospan board decors). Every other value comes from what color owners and paint makers publish openly, with its source and date.

Where does my photo go?

Nowhere. The image is drawn on a canvas inside your browser to read its colors. It is never uploaded and the page sends no request with it.
